Best/Worst Experiences at Exeter?

Ever pull an all-nighter? Lost consecutively in sports? Screw up on stage? Embarrass yourself in class?

Got a flat A on an English paper that you never thought was possible? Won an interdorm tournament?

This is where you can discuss general anecdotes you'd like to share at Exeter and elaborate on how have you've dealt with living inside the 'Exeter Bubble.'

  1. Exeter is the worst place in the world. If I were to write a book and have a metaphorical hell in the plot-line, I would model it on the brick buildings and overbearing, illogical faculty members that patrol it. As a school, it preaches acceptance and nourishment, but ends up isolating kids and ruining childhoods. If you are trying to rob your child of their teenage years and turn them into a self-centered, work-oriented ass hole, then send them up to Exeter. If you want your child to get a great education and maintain their human qualities (all while having a good time with other NORMAL kids) send them to our older and more prestigious uncle, Phillips Andover.

    1. Wow, that's a bad inferiority complex you have about Andover!

  2. Exeter is the best place in the world.. it really opened new doors for me. Without this place I would probably be like my other friends back at home who are mediocre and have nothing more to dream for than partying every weekend. This place whips you into shape and makes sure you understand what truly matters. You learn valuable life lessons here. Andover is a little too laid back for my taste.

    1. Wow, how typically elitist of you to call other people, who might not have the opportunity to pay 40 grand annual tution, mediocre.

    2. There is something called financial aid. Over half of students at Exeter receive financial aid. How typically mediocre of you to call someone elitist yet cannot perform a simple google search.

  3. above post --
    1) if you think the point of spending your life is dedicating it to those backward aspects that punch holes in your brain, you will most certainly fail. Why are you even here? I feel like the reason you say those things is simply because many students are intellectually more capable than others. You are the latter, and maybe that's why you feel like this school is such a drag. Go to Andover and make everyone happy.
    2) Who says you lose your social skills by studying and not doing drugs? You are a wannabe fool who apparently can't be accepted either way.

  4. The problem with this blog, is that instead of informing potential Exeter students about our school, it is going to turn into an Exeter/Andover war. All I can say, is

ANDOVER STUDENTS, IF YOU REALLY WANT TO SAY SOMETHING, MAKE YOUR OWN BLOG. DON'T RUIN YOUR OWN SCHOOL'S GREAT REPUTATION BY ACTING LIKE IMMATURE IDIOTS.

Especially the comment before me which I quote says "F***EXETER".

On that note, FOR PROSPECTIVE STUDENTS:

Come to Exeter if you're prepared to spend a lot of time on work. Students really have a love/hate relationship with the school, I have found. Basically, your Prep and Lower years will be great, but expect mountain loads of homework in your Upper and Senior years. There are many long nights, and you will feel exhausted at times.

You will also get to know amazing friends, live in fantastic dorms (which ends up being hilarious sometimes) and get to take classes you never imagined were possible.

Just so you know, Exeter and Andover have a huge rivalry, and our athletic competition is this Saturday, so its to be expected that the Andover smurfs are feeling intimdated and want to post ugly comments :D

    GO BIG RED!

  5. woahhhh, someone hasn't left their room in a few days. 332 dragging you down? go outside, get some fresh air, make a friend or two. Stop spewing bullshit about the health risks of drugs and alcohol. Both have been proven to increase brain function and keep kids like you away from parties. If you honestly think that being at Exeter has not robbed you of your god-given teenage time, you obviously haven't even given these activities a chance. Go back to your homework and make sure you're in bed by 11 -- wouldn't want you to get tired in class tomorrow when you're sucking up to your teacher!

  7. On that note, it's 10:43 PM - and the internet switches off at 11 PM on school nights.

  9. oh. my. GOD.
andover kids- SHUT UP. i agree with post 5.
and at least we're exonians- not "philipians!" what a weird name. and our founder paid for your school.
    NOW BACK TO BEST/WORST EXPERIENCES:
the exeter win in football on e/a weekend last erm was amazing! it was so cool how everybody rushed onto the field! so fun! i hope tomorrow is just as good!

    GO EXETER!
    BEAT ANDOVER!

  10. It's a lot easier for girls here. There is a lot of hazing in the boys' dorms. This school is honestly not worth it. You have no time for anything but studying if you play sports. If you stay at public school or go to an easy prep school, you will have a much better chance of going to college.

  11. i don't think this blog is helpful at all.
the only reason people make blogs is to DRAW ATTENTION TO THEMSELVES, or have an OUTLET. this is both. it was already written up in the exonian, and everyone said it was neither good nor bad, just because they didn;t want challenge ppl who were sp[eaking the truth, even though THIS IS MOSTLY LIES.

personally, i think PHILLIPS EXETER ACADEMY IS AWESOME
    and
    THIS BLOG TOTALLY SUCKS!!!
    from,
the rational person with a brain enough to see when a great school's rep is getting trashed because a kid was bored one saturday night so he created a blog

    ReplyDelete
  12. I think this 'rational person with a brain enough' is himself being irrational and pea-brained. How in the world is the administrator supposed to draw attention to hismelf ie he/she is anonymous? How can you show that this school's rep is getting trashed, when the polls clearly say that more people would return to Exeter than don't? And if you sift through the topics, most of the comments are optimistic and helpful rather than purposefully degrating. I think you yourself are the one that's CAUSING this blog to suck and you're the one who's giving the school a bad name because it proves that our school unfortunately houses 'IDOT' students like yourself. I hope you meant to spell it correctly and say 'idiot' rather tha IDOT? sounds like some apple product.

If you love this school so much, go post some reasons that could convince applicants to come here.

-Bigger brain than you because I can actually spell.

p.s. the negative comments about this school are usually true and they're more of what this school needs improvement on rather than this school sucking for it
p.p.s. the poll is would you RETURN to Exeter. A lot of students were encouraged or even forced by their parents to come here, and the poll asks if they would return if they had a choice.
Also, you could enjoy a life-changing experience but not want to go through it again. I'm extremely happy that I came here because I learned so much. But would I do four more years here? I don't think so. I'd definitely want my kids to come here though, but again, it's just for the one-time experience.

  13. Coming to Exeter is hands down the best decision I have made in my life to date. It's been an extremely enriching experience, and has broadened my horizons in ways that my previous school could not have done.

Having said that, there is some (not much, but some) merit in what certain Andover students have said in these comments. Yes, you sacrifice part of your youth by coming to Exeter. Exeter is hard work, make no mistake about it, and you won't have the typical highschool lifestyle as presented by teen-movies of partying, getting wasted on the weekends, and losing your virginity in a car (you're going to lose it in a bed, which is significantly more comfortable).

However, that's not to say you won't have a social life at all. Exonians are by and large a fun group of people and are also very diverse in their outlooks on life. In contrast to what an earlier commenter wrote, I'm a varsity athlete two terms out of three, and I've never felt starved of social interaction, and I've been able to sustain a healthy relationship with my girlfriend.

So, again, Exeter is hard. However, if you take advantage of the opportunities afforded to you, you can learn so much, and can enjoy yourself while doing it.

  14. yeah, if you don't care about grades at all....

  15. exeter is great, but there are better educations out there. be wary of what you take from the school. as you can tell, there are a lot of spoiled bitchy kids, as whining is acceptable here, but once you find a sane group of people, things are better here than your average high school. those who are socially unsuccessful here are not any better in the real world, you shouldn't blame the school. in the end, it's just another school.

  16. just got accepted at exeter and andover- no idea which one to choose.
it seems that there are pros and cons to each. for example: i love harkness, but i've heard andover kids have more fun.
    any thoughts?

  17. if you want a job, go to exeter

  19. I would love to go to exeter. I am VERY impressed by the harkness method as discussion and collaboration are the ways I learn best. It costs so much, though.

  24. So are there drug problems at exeter? If so who supplies it, the town or the students?

  25. wow, you guys bitch waaaay too much about work. i mean so do i, but i don't have the privilege of going to one of the best schools in the world. i'm not even from the US but phillips exeter is my dream school which is why i'm on this blog. and trust me, where i'm from, private school or public, you have to work so hard that only the most intelligent people manage to have a life as well as amazing grades. my whole damn country is so competitive. who fucking cares about the 'drugs' or the 'partying'? just feel lucky that you guys actually have the option of going to a school like this.

  26. Thank God I was being to think this would never end, but very entertaining to read. Good show guys. (Applauding) :)

  27. is this thing on? what time is it?

  28. I am really interested in applying to Exeter but all of the articles don't discuss REAL teenage situations, what is the party situation? Do people do drugs? How tf do people lose their virginities? I'm not in to partying, etc.And boarding school seems like a really great way to avoid it, any thoughts?

  29. I am from way back in the dark ages, having attended Exeter from 1977 to 1981. I was deep into the drug scene back then, which included lots of marijuana and LSD. It is amazing that I survived as well as I did. PEA was the best of times and the worst of times. For an egg-head like me the classrooms were electric and to be valued by your peers for your intellect is a rarity in secondary school. The problem was there was next to no involvement, let alone caring nurturing and support, by adults outside the classrooms and sports fields. The book by my classmate Pam Erens, The Virgins, captures well what it was like to live in a community of 1000 adolescents without connections to adults. If you come from a stable, loving family background, have a strong sense of self and a drive to excel Exeter is the place for you. If you are messy like most adolescents it is likely that Exeter will exacerbate your emotional struggles, possibly with long-term consequences.

  30. I was hazed at Exeter. My bed was short-sheeted, toothpaste and shaving cream put in my shoes, and I was held by my heels over the fifth floor stairwell in Hoyt Hall. The faculty resident wouldn't help. Social Darwinism ruled. Hazing was a part of the underground curriculum in my day, though perhaps that has changed with coeducation. I left after my upper-middler year for a progressive school in the Berkshires, where I was much happier and managed to get into Harvard anyway. My advice is to consider alternatives to "prestige" schools like Exeter, ones where the level of kindness and compassion in the institutional culture is much higher.
